Terpene Dilution Guide by Application

Different products require different terpene concentrations. Too little and you won't taste or smell anything. Too much and the flavor becomes overpowering or harsh. This calculator handles the math so you get it right every time.

Recommended Concentrations

Application%CarrierNotes
Distillate5%DistillateAdd terpenes to warm (not hot) distillate.
Vape Carts8%Distillate / OilHigher concentration for vape carts since the heating element vaporizes quickly.
Edibles1%Butter / Oil / ChocolateLow concentration for edibles — terpenes are potent flavoring agents.
Gummies0.5%Gummy BaseVery low percentage for gummies.
Tinctures3%MCT Oil / AlcoholMCT oil is the most common tincture carrier.
Topicals2%Lotion / Balm BasePatch test first.
Candles2%Soy / BeeswaxAdd terpenes when wax cools to 135-145F.
Diffusers5%Carrier OilDilute in a light carrier oil (sweet almond, jojoba).
Room Spray3%Water + AlcoholUse 70%+ isopropyl or grain alcohol as the base.
Soap1.5%Soap BaseAdd terpenes at trace (for cold process) or after melting (melt & pour).

Distillate & Vape Cartridges

For distillate, 3-8% terpene concentration is standard. Lower percentages (3-5%) give a subtle, natural flavor while higher percentages (6-8%) deliver bold, strain-specific taste. Always add terpenes to warm distillate (around 140°F / 60°C) — never boiling. Stir slowly to avoid introducing air bubbles, and let the mixture rest for 24-48 hours before filling cartridges for the best flavor development.

For pre-filled vape cartridges, use 6-10% since the rapid heating of a coil vaporizes terpenes quickly. A 1mL cartridge typically needs just 0.06-0.10 mL of terpenes.

Edibles & Gummies

Edibles need much lower concentrations — typically 0.5-2%. Terpenes are potent flavoring agents, and a little goes a very long way in food. Always mix terpenes into a fat-based carrier (butter, coconut oil, MCT oil, chocolate) since they don't dissolve in water. For gummies, add terpenes after the base has cooled below 160°F to preserve the volatile compounds.

Drops to Milliliters

A standard dropper produces approximately 20 drops per milliliter. For small batches like individual vape carts, counting drops is more precise than measuring fractions of a milliliter.

Safety

Never use undiluted terpenes. Keep away from open flames — terpenes are flammable. Store in a cool, dark place with the cap sealed. Use in a ventilated area. Food and topical applications should use food-grade terpenes only. Always test small batches before scaling up production.
